The Supreme Court today, chaired by Kerim Mehdiyev, considered the cassation appeal of members of the Presidium of the Party of People’s Front of Azerbaijan (PPFA) Mammad Ibrahim, Bakhtiyar Imanov and Ayaz Magerramov.
They were arrested and sentenced to probation due to the demonstration on July 14-15, 2020 in Baku.
The Supreme Court rejected the complaint, Ibrahim told Turan. “We didn’t expect any other solution. Just to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, we had to go through the cassation instance in Azerbaijan,” Ibrahim said.
“The trial went on for five minutes and the judge announced a pre-prepared decision,” he said.
The judge of the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court, Farhad Kerimov, in charge of mass media relations, confirmed the information about the rejection of the complaint of these persons. According to him, the positions of the court are stated in the decision and dissenters can apply to the ECHR.
*On July 14, 2020, in the evening, thousands of spontaneous demonstrations began in Baku demanding to start a war for the liberation of Karabakh. The march lasted all night and ended early in the morning on July 15. Some of the demonstrators entered the Parliament building and damaged the premises. After that, mass arrests were made.
Note that 37 people were brought to criminal responsibility, including 16 members of the PPFA. However, later the measure of restraint was changed for them. All the defendants in the case were sentenced to probation: Mamed Ibrahim – to 4 years and 1 month, Imanov and Magerramov – to 3 years, 7 months and 13 days.
