The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today, 20 May, has announced four decisions on Azerbaijan. The Court recognised most of the alleged violations and obliged the state to pay the applicants a total of more than €118,000 as compensation for damages.
In the case of Mehman Aliyev and others against Azerbaijan, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the applicants’ right to freedom of association had been violated. Each of the 12 applicants had to be paid EUR 4,500 and EUR 6,000 for legal costs.
In the case of Elchin Abdullayev and others against Azerbaijan, the court also held that the applicants’ right of association had been violated. According to the judgment, the government must pay 540 euros to 4 of the 13 applicants, 1080 to each of 2, 1620 to each of 3, 2160 to 1 applicant, 2430 to each of 2 applicants, 4500 to 1 applicant, 6000 to 1 applicant, 1000 to 1 applicant and 360 to 1 applicant (total 28,060 euros).
In the case of Elchin Mammad against Azerbaijan, the ECHR declared the complaint inadmissible.
In the case of Alexander Lapshin against Azerbaijan, the ECHR held that there had been a violation of Article 2 of the Convention (right to life) (both substantive and procedural) against the applicant. The applicant should be paid EUR 30,000.
