[:en]Emin Sagiyev, recognized by human rights activists as a political prisoner, continues a hunger strike in jail N 6 since August 18, demanding his release, said his wife Aygun Sagiyeva.
Lawyer Bahruz Bayramov said that Sagiyev went on a hunger strike in protest against the decision of the Supreme Court, which upheld the conviction against him.
According to his wife, Sagiev’s health has deteriorated sharply.
“Yesterday, at the insistent requests of doctors, he again refused to eat. Emin can barely speak. He has severe pains in his heart and kidneys. He demands a meeting with the Ombudsman, ”A. Sagiyeva said.
Today, members of the National Preventive Group for the Prevention of Torture under the Ombudsman visited Sagiyev.
“The appeal of Sagiyev was listened to, he was provided with legal advice. He was informed that, within the framework of his powers, the Ombudsman will provide him with the necessary legal assistance, ”the Ombudsman’s office said.
According to the latest information, Sagiev intends to continue the hunger strike until his demand is fulfilled – release from prison.
In accordance with the requirements of the legislation, he is placed in a medical and sanitary unit and is under the supervision of doctors.
Sagiev was arrested in November 2017, and in 2018 sentenced to 7 years on charges of drug trafficking on a large scale.
However, local human rights activists are convinced that Sagiyev was punished for his journalistic activities by his brother-in-law, political emigrant Turkel Azerturk. The latter has been living in Europe for several years. He was an employee of the Internet resource Azerbaijan Saaty, where he sharply criticized the Azerbaijani authorities.
On August 18, Sagiyev went on a hunger strike after the country’s Supreme Court dismissed his appeal against the verdict.
The defense intends to file a complaint with the ECHR.[:]
