Yesterday the verdict for the editor-in-chief of the site Fikret Faramazoglu (Ibishbeyli) was announced in the Baku Serious Crimes Court. The court found him guilty of extortion by threats and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment, and prohibited him from engaging in journalism for two years after his release. The defense does not agree with the decision of the court and intends to appeal against it.

The prosecutor earlier asked the court to sentence Faramazoglu to eight years of imprisonment.

Faramazoglu was arrested on June 30, 2016 by officers of the Office for Combating Organized Crime of the Moscow Patriarchate. According to the police, he was detained red-handed after receiving a bribe of 3000 manats.

The journalist rejected the accusations and said that he was being persecuted for publications about illegal dens. Local human rights defenders recognized him as a political prisoner. (Turan)
